Surah Qadr Tafsir The Night of Power |
Written by Nuraz |
Salaam (WRWB). The night of Qadr is the most powerful night of our entire life. It is so significant that in a hadith it is narrated,
"Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months." - Sahih Muslim
This same phrase and phenomenon also is mentioned in the Quran. More on that part shortly.
To put 1000 months into a more reasonable comparison. It is worth 83 years and 4 months. To put that into our lives, one night can equate to blessings in our entire lives. Keep in mind that this is just one night in one Ramadan. Inshallah if Allah (SWT) keeps us alive to witness more Ramadans, it is these nights you can obtain a lifetime's worth of hasanat.
An average human living his life on Earth is said to be around 73.3 years. Or the term is known as “life expectancy.” So just look at the blessings in this month Subhanallah.
Some other facts to note about this powerful night is that it is set to be located on an odd day in one of the last ten days.
There is actually a story about the Prophet (PBUH) about the day of Qadr. He had been told the number and exact night of this special day, but all of a sudden he stumbled upon an argument. And whilst disputing that argument, the Prophet (PBUH) had forgotten the exact date.
Don’t worry though! There are still hints and facts that we know that refer to this exact day. In a hadith it is narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) had said,
"I was shown Laylat al-Qadr, but I forgot it. So, seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan." - Sahih Bukhari
Now that we have gone over the normal facts about this powerful night. Let us go over the Surah. Majority of the scholars believe that Surah Qadr is a Makki Surah, whilst some scholars dispute Surah Qadr is Madani. For the sake of this article we will go with the majority; Makki.
It is the 97th Chapter of the Quran that is one of the shortest surahs in the entire Quran. And of course basing on the name, Surah Qadr talks about the Night of Power.
Meaning - Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. (97:1)
This highlights that one of the major reasons why this night is so powerful is that the Holy Quran was sent on this very day, as we know Ramadan is the month of the Holy Quran.
Meaning - And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? (97:2)
Meaning - The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. (97:3)
This again goes over that significant detail of Laylatul Qadr, that it is month 83 years and 4 months.
Meaning - The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. (97:4)
This ayat basically explains how the angel’s aura present makes this night even more valuable.
Meaning - Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. (97:5)
The last ayat would then foreshadow the path of this night. How believers should be peaceful, seeking forgiveness, and be on their best for this entire month.
Overall the surah is short and the message of it is quite thorough and simple. The Night of Power is a day that will come in this month of Ramadan. It is our job to comply and use to the best use we can for ourselves. As this Laylatul Qadr night might even be our last, only Allah (SWT) knows.
It is a time for believers like you and I to take its rewards as it is on the eve of the last 10 days of Ramadan. One of the most significant times of the entire year. As we should take the opportunity to change ourselves and seek a new era in our faith. May Allah (SWT) allow us to seize the night in the best way possible and forgive our past sins. Salaam (WRWB)
